        Unit Course Participants

Twenty six Patrol Leaders and Assistant Leaders participated in this leadership course organized by the National Program Commission of the Scout Association of Belize.

The Course had participation from Holy Redeemer Scout Group, St. Ignatius Scout Group, Burrell Boom Scout Unit, Trial Farm Scout Unit and Mary Hill Scout Unit.

Leaders that accompanied their groups were Fidelia Cuellar, Nicholas Ruiz, Teresita Oliver and Aaron Gentle.

The training course was designed to give firsthand experience to the youth leaders and their Unit Councils in the areas of “The Mission”, “The Symbolic Frame work”, “Profile and Responsibilities of the Patrol/ Assistant leader”, “The Patrol and the Scout Unit”, “The Scout Method”, “The Scout Law and the Promise”, “The Progressive Stages and the Proficiency Badges.”

The Symbolic Framework for the Course was based on the invasion of Scotland by the Vikings in 1263. It is said that Viking King Hakon sailed with 200 long ships to confront Scots King Alexander 111 but as fate would have it, a storm grounded the Viking fleet and the Scots forced them back to Orkney. Victory gave the Scots sovereignty over the Western Isles.

During the Course the participants were divided into two groups, the Scots and the Vikings, and in between session they prepared for battle by constructing their shields and swords. By the end of the evening the Scots and Vikings were all geared and painted up for battle; following the battle there was a Celebration were both the Scots and the Vikings gathered for a feast and long lasting friendship.

At the evaluation the participants’ responses were as follows:

  • Ø We learned a lot from the sessions
  • Ø We liked and enjoyed the games
  • Ø We met a lot of new friends
  • Ø The only thing they did not like was that there was no time for swimming

Overall all enjoyed the Training Course and are looking forward to Part 2 in May 2011.
