Belize Sailing Association (BzSA)
Buttonwood Bay, Belize City. At about 9am Saturday 20th November a break in squally weather allowed the BzSA “Introduction to Sailing” event a sunny respite. The meet was a precursor to the launch of the Optimist Project.
The Optimist is an international class of sailing dinghy designed for 9 to 14 year old boys or girls. This project is the implementation of the BzSA vision to advance sailing in Belize to international level and promote more recreational use of our waters.
The meet was attended by representatives of youth groups, primary and secondary schools, the University of Belize, the private sector and several men and women of all ages.
Members of the BzSA delivered a short presentation (Attached) on the Association, the Belize Sailing Standards, Awards and Instructor Training Program and the Optimist Project.
Everyone present had the opportunity of sailing in the Sea Scouts “Bosuns” and high performance Dart 16 catamarans and Hunter 17s from the British Forces Adventure Training Centre at St George’s Caye. One pre-teen girl described her first sailing experience as, “fantastic” and a high school teacher reminisced on his earlier sailing adventure to the cayes. The event was treated with a “sail past” by the venerable 110 year old sand lighter “Radio”.
Persons and representatives of youth organizations interested in the Optimist Project are invited to attend a meeting on Monday 6th December 2010 at 5:30pm in the Conference Room of the National Sports Council, Civic Centre, Belize City.
