On Wednesday 10th February, 2010 Belize Water Services (BWS) Limited donated 8 lifejackets to the Sea Scouts of Belize. The lifejackets were handed over by Ms. Kimberly Westby on behalf of BWS to Mr. John Oliver who received the lifejackets on behalf of the Sea Scouts.
This is the second such donation made by BWS to the Sea Scouts. The 1st Belize T.S. Merlin Sea Scout Unit was formed in 2003 with programmes that are designed to develop character and value-based leadership training. The Sea Scout Programme which mission is: "To prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Promise and Law" is part of the National programme of The Scout Association of Belize.
Lifejackets are necessary and compulsory equipment for each Sea Scout prior to embarking any vessel whether for regular training, adventure activities or sailboat racing events, such as the race conducted on the Baron Bliss/Benefactors Day. The use of a lifejacket is an integral part of the Sea Scout Safety Afloat Programme which is in harmony with the Sea Scout Promise.
The Sea Scout Promise:
As a Sea Scout I promise to do my best,
To guard against water accidents,
To know the location and proper use of the lifesaving devices on every boat I board,
To be prepared to render aid to those in need,
To seek to preserve the motto of the sea, women and children first,
The Sea Scouts meet and train every Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm at Buttonwood Bay. For further information, kindly contact the Skipper, Major Gilbert Swaso @ 670-8297 or the Sailing Instructor Mr. John Oliver @ 666-8911.
