The National Program Commission will be conducting a Unit Council Course from January 14 - 16, 2011 at Camp Oakley near Burrell Boom Village.  The Course will start at 7:00 p.m. on Friday 14 and will conclude at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday 16.

This Course is specially designed for current 2011 registered members of Unit Councils of all Scout Units; this means all Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders.  (Unit Council Members that have participated in a similar Course may attend if so desired). (Registration Deadline - Wednesday January 12, 2011)

The Course is designed to give firsthand experience to Unit Councils in the areas of the Symbolic Framework of Scouts, Profile of a Patrol Leader, the Patrol and how the Patrol system operates, the Scout Method and Group Life, the identity and structure of the Scout Unit, the Scout Law and Promise, progress and proficiency badges.

Symbolic Framework for the Course: The invasion of Scotland by the Vikings in 1263 A.D.

$20.00 is being charged to help defray the cost of this Course which will cover the cost of the Unit Council Manual (one per participant), materials, meals that will be prepared by Patrols starting with breakfast on Saturday to a packed snack on Sunday.  Snacks will also be available during breaks.  Participants are to provide their own packed supper for Friday night.

Unit Councils are responsible for their transportation to and from the Course.

Participants should assemble by the Methodist School in Burrell Boom for the opening ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Friday January 14, 2011.  Instructions will be given at this point and all Unit Councils should come prepared to hike to their training bases along with all their belongings and Patrol equipment.  A VEHICLE MAY BE MADE AVAILABLE TO TRANSPORT HEAVY EQUIPMENT.

Uniforms:  Class A and B are required.

Equipment and How to Arrive:

Each Unit Council should arrive in Patrol formation and with complete uniform for the opening ceremony.  After the hike participants should wear Class B uniform. The Scout Leader, who will monitor their Patrol Leaders, will participate alongside his or her Patrol Leaders.

All Unit Councils must bring along the necessary camping equipment: first aid box, tents, tarps, cooking utensils including portable stove and small butane tank, and personal camping equipment, etc. (Remember that each Unit Council will be hiking with their equipment if no transportation is available).

Upon arrival at the campsite, the Course Director will direct all Unit Councils to their respective campsites.

Recognition:  Each participant will receive a Certificate of Attendance for this Course. An Award will be given to the Unit Council with the highest Scout Spirit for the duration of the Course.
