2007 Coastal and Riverways Cleanup

Over 1000 participants including students, youth organizations, conservation groups, NGO’s and Scouts all around Belize joined forces on Saturday October 6 to clean Belize’s coastal line, cayes and riverways of marine debris and other polluting agents that create life-threatening situations to our marine life.  This is the 16th year that The Scout Association of Belize and the 2nd year the Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute have teamed up to conduct this event in connection with the “International Coastal Cleanup” organized by the Ocean Conservancy based in Washington, DC.

The campaign aims to create awareness of the importance of the preservation and conservation of our coastline and riverways and likewise important is the recording of the kind and quantity of debris collected.  Once compiled, this information is used to confront polluters to work out amicable solutions to prevent further pollution.

The countrywide cleanup began at 8:00 a.m. and concluded by midday Saturday morning.  The over 1000 Belize participants joined more than three quarters of a million people on the world’s coasts and waterways for the largest global volunteer land and underwater cleanup this year.

This event depends a lot on the volunteer element to do the cleanup and recording of the data and also on the donation of the materials to do the cleanup and other donations to treat the participants after completing the cleanup.  This support comes from individuals, business firms and companies and has been ongoing since the inception of the cleanup in Belize.

Preliminary data collected shows that plastic will once again dominate the list of Top 10 Debris Items and that once again, Shoreline and Recreational Activities are the primary source for debris found on land.

The Scout Association, Coastal Zone Management and the Ocean Conservancy pay special tribute to our local sponsors for their generous financial support, employees volunteer participation, and in-kind donations.  Their kind gifts of supplies, food, beverages, services, and more, keep our volunteers motivated and energized for the difficult work of coastal cleanup.  We salute our sponsors’ contribution and commitment to a cleaner marine environment.  Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!!!!
